Everyone knows the “musty” smell that can be found in wooden furniture if it has not been used for a while. Whether it’s cabinets or dressers, wooden furniture adds a special warmth and elegance to our environment. So, even though the smell of clutter is unpleasant, we don’t want to get rid of it. Here are a few tips to solve the problem!

Before you start

First of all, it is important to empty your furniture. Sometimes, the smell of stuffiness can come from an object or old clothes. Therefore, leave the doors of your empty cabinet open for a few hours before cleaning it. Also, take the time to clean out any items or clothes that were inside your cabinet.

A thorough cleaning

Once your furniture has been aired for a few hours, it’s time to check if the stench is still present. If it is the case, proceed to the deep cleaning of your furniture. To do this, mix 3 liters of water with 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 30 grams of Marseille soap. When your mixture is ready, moisten a soft sponge and clean the internal and external surfaces of your furniture. Once the sponge has been thoroughly wiped all over, dry with a microfiber cloth to prevent the wood from warping as it absorbs the water.

Anti-odor tips

Even if you have cleaned your furniture properly, the bad smell may unfortunately return. This depends on the age of the wood, among other things. Fortunately, there are a few tricks you can use. These will allow you to deodorize or absorb the bad smell.

  • Scented sachets

First, an old technique: scented sachets. Take a small cloth bag and put dried flower petals or cinnamon sticks in it. You can also put a cotton ball soaked in an essential oil, like lavender or sandalwood. Then place your little bag in a corner of the cabinet and it will scent the space.

  • Absorbent bowls

What better way to absorb odors than with baking soda? Indeed, baking soda has a very high absorbency that will free you from the bad smell! Take a bowl and put 3 or 4 tablespoons of baking soda in it. Then put the bowl in your furniture and that’s it!
